So by now most of you know that I have a personal vendetta against bacon, sausage and sweet tea. But what, you may (or may not – I could just be talking to myself here) ask, do I approve? Is my life all about rice-cakes and celery? As the French would say (and a shout-out to my Arkan-Paris friend Martine) mais non! But especially with proteins, I try to choose wiiiiiisely as the crusaders said in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
[Let me first re-iterate that bacon and sausage have almost no protein and lots and lots of fat, so they are a treat, not a protein source.]
Now that I’ve got that off my chest, great sources of protein are:
2% cottage cheese with a couple of tablespoons of sugar free jelly mixed in on top of Ezekial bread toast
A can of tuna mixed with a ton (about one whole) chopped onion, miracle whip light +/- hard boiled egg and salt and pepper
Smoothies made from skim milk, protein powder, ½ scoop of sugar-free/fat-free pudding mix and some ice blended in a blender
Part skim string cheese sticks
Veggie burgers with a slice of low-fat cheese melted on top
Scrambled egg whites mixed with tomatoes, onions and a ¼ cup of cheddar cheese
Beans, beans, beans! As chilli, with rice, in salads

Oh but its so hard to give up the tea!! Splenda for me was the ultimate alternative and admittedly, I have used it since it first hit the market over sugar. Given the choice of my Diet Dr. Pepper addiction or my Splenda Tea addiction, the Diet Dr. Pepper was easy to do without. I have been very lucky and cut it out before my surgery on my preop diet and have not had a sip since and no desire for it.
As for the scrambled egg white recipe, fresh spinach thrown in with this is wonderful!!!

Oh no, you should definitely do tea with Splenda! When I say “sweet tea” I mean the evil brew made with ginormous amounts of real sugar and tea, not tea with sugar substitutes like Equal, Splenda or Sweet N’Low. “Sweet tea” with the substitutes is a great drink – keep at it, you’ve made a great choice there

What is Ezekiel bread toast? It sounds interesting?

Ezekiel bread is a bread made from 7 grains mentioned in Ezekiel 4:9 (and no, I didn’t memorize that, I had to look it up). It’s made from truly whole grains without any ground flour at all. It is very high in fiber, has complete protein (unlike most breads which have only some of the 20 amino acids) and is very filling. You can buy it at most health food stores. Here in Texarkana, you can get it at the Granary or at Sunnyside Foods.
