We found a study that highlighted something we have suspected for some time. Keeping a journal or diary of your food intake helps you lose weight. By writing down what you are eating you are able to review your food intake and confront yourself. It requires you to be honest with yourself. Since eating is often a subconscious act if you don’t keep a food journal you may not know truly appreciate how much you are eating.

We recommend the following food and exercise journal which was shown to us by one of our successful patients who said it worked great for her:

I saw something interesting online earlier today that I’m going to try. It said that you can use your camera cell phone as a sort of visual food diary. Take a picture of everything you eat. The article stated that it makes folks rethink their portion size and WHAT they’re actually eating. My goal is to try it for a week. What are your thoughts of that and do you think it would work?

We heard about this technique at a conference and have suggested it to several patients. I agree that it’s a powerful technique: 1) it makes you pause for just a second to decide if you REALLY want whatever it is you’re about to eat 2) it allows us to track much more accurately what your portion size actually is (as opposed to what we all think it is) 3) it’s much more accurate than trying to recall later in the day what you’ve eaten – real-time accounting vs. recollection. We had patients use their cell phones to take pics then e-mail them to us for review and accountability. I SUGGEST YOU WRITE A BLOG POST ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE DOING THIS
you can stay anonymous, but tell us how it worked for you, advantages vs. disadvantages and what you learned from it (sneaky, aren’t we)

I find I stick to a proper calorie intake when I journal my intake.
My wife, Dr. Keilin, journals her food intake EVERY SINGLE DAY!
