Lap Band

Lap Band questions

As we approach the new year, we have been contemplating some changes to our blog. We are planning on having regular contributions by the doctors and staff. We realize that for some people there are questions they might have that aren’t getting answered elsewhere with regards to Lap Band diet and food choices, or Lap Band post op surgery expectations. We are putting together a list of topics to address in January 2009 so we wanted to hear from you. Leave a comment, what LapBand topic do you want us to talk about?

And here’s a bonus. However can first tell us the name of sculpture shown in the picture above and where the original is located, will get a free copy of the book and DVD “Walk Away the Pounds” by Leslie Sansone. Good luck!

  1. The Back Ali Says:

It is called “The Thinker” or some call it The Thinking Man and the original is located in Paris.

  2. Texas Lap Band Doc Says:

    Wow. That didn’t take long.
Yes that is The Thinker by Auguste Rodin, and the original is at the Rodin Museum in Paris.

Good job. Send an email to Betty and we will get your book and DVD out to you!

For the everyone else, please leave comments on what topics you want the doctors and staff to discuss on our blog in the coming months!

  3. Sharon Says:

The Thinker, Plaza del Capitolio, Buenos Aires, Argentina

  4. Sharon Says:

LOL.. Looks like I was a day late and a book short. I would like to see topics on the best foods to eat. Since we can’t eat alot, food choice is so important. Since most of us work and only get a 30 minute lunch break, I need ideas of something quick and packed with protein and nutrients.

  5. Anonymous Says:

i would like to see the flouro used at the office.

    Maltese lover

  6. Texas Lap Band Doc Says:

Sharon, that’s an excellent topic to cover and we will address that.

Anonymous, Introducing Xray equipment into the office is not so easy.

Firstly, one must meet State regulations for Xray equipment that may require modifications to the building such as lining the walls with lead.

Next, there is the capital expense of having to buy a unit and table or bed that is compatible with the Xray unit. Reimbursement for fills is not high such that it is not clear we would ever be able to have the machine and equipment pay for itself.

Finally there is a space issue, in that it is not clear that even overlooking the above two issues we would have a room large enough to house such a unit.

Never say never, we aren’t ruling it out 100% but there are many issues at play here.

    I don’t have Betty’s email…could I get that info please?

  9. Trish Serna Says:

Does a tighter lap band mean less weight loss? My band is as tight as possible and I still can not seem to loss the last 30 pounds. What do I need to do?

  10. admin Says:

It is not uncommon to have a tough time to lose that last stubborn 30 pounds or so.

See our earlier post that describes what to do when you hit a plateau.

  11. Pam Says:

I have more trouble putting together a menu than anything else. It sounds crazy but with working 2 jobs and taking care of family, I always seem to leave my needs to last. Therefore, I’m always rushing in and trying to find something at meal time or trying to find something to take to work that is a correct choice. Maybe we could all submit one day’s meal choices and put it together in a menu. We could use this as a “shopping list” and also give us some new ideas.

  12. Dr. Ron Hekier Says:

This is a great idea. One nice feature for the blog might be a weekly feature where we highlight a menu. Thanks for your advice! Dr. Keilin, Betty, and I will work on it!

  13. Stefanie Says:

Since we’re compiling menus, could we include a section of recommended foods available at local restaurants? I’m a newbie and I need some good ideas for when I’m out and about.

  14. Rachael Keilin, MD Says:

Great idea! I’ll start working on it today.

  15. Carolyn Says:

I hear from time to time about stretching the stomach and or the esophagus, if this does happen can it be reversed? Can the lap band ever work properly again. Also are there any carpools from Hope to the support group? I need a ride and will help pay on the gas. I am having some problems and don’t want to be kicked out of the program. I’m having a really hard time mentally and not sure how to handle it.

  16. Rachael Keilin, MD Says:

I don’t think you’ll get kicked out – sounds like you just need some help :)
I would come on in to the office so you can talk to one of the docs and to Betty – let us help you figure out the best way to proceed. You may need some tests, or you may just need a different diet approach. Let’s talk!

  17. Sonya Says:

I have only had my band for a few weeks…. I have not had a fill yet that is next week…. I wake up at night with pain under the port site and it seems to swell at night, of course when I bend over it is sharp…. I understand that and wondered if the pains are from the muscle under the port. Is it anything to worry about…. Thanks

  18. Ron Hekier, MD Says:

Sonya, It is impossible to diagnose a specific medical condition online. (Legal disclaimer :) )
The discomfort you refer to occurs for some people. The port sits on the muscle and as a result for some people there is soreness for the first few weeks after surgery especially if you sleep on the side of the port.
    Good luck!

  19. James Says:

I have been very seriously wanting to have the lap band procedure done as I am only 36 and am at my heaviest weight of 365, at 5ft 10in this may not be huge but is very much overweight. I am on HBP meds, Cholesterol meds, sleeping meds….blah blah, Im sure this is typical in most morbid obesity cases. I have definately exhauseted many other means of weight loss. My family have all been fat, as far back as I can remember, my mom had the Roux-en-Y surgery a couple years ago and did great. I am wanting something a little less invasive so as not to be out of work for long, which is why I like the idea of the lap band, plus the fact that it can be tightened or loosened to control speed of weightloss.
Unfortunately, along with inheriting my family’s Fat gene I have also aquired the family curse of being broke and haveing bad credit. See where this is going?? I am wondering if anyone has heard of any type of government funding, via grants, federal aide, etc. that would cover this. I would think with all the hooplah of the nations Obesity pandemic that something would be available to assist those in true need of this.
    Thanks for any info.
    James

  20. Dr. Ron Hekier Says:

Medicare covers LapBand. Medicaid is on a state by state basis. In some states a local workforce commission may have a grant to provide coverage for weight loss surgery to get you back in the work force. There is a program in Arkansas that does this. What state are you in?

  21. James Says:

I actually am here in texarkana, AR. Please fill me in on this program and what all I need to do to get the ball rolling. THANK YOU…Now I am so excited I wont be able to sleep…LOL
