LapBands and Dairy

Did you know that there is a lot of scientific evidence about the goodness of dairy? Really! Dairy products tend to get a bad reputation because of high fat cheeses and cream, but there is a lot of data to suggest that eating three servings of dairy per day can help you lose weight.  Dieters consuming the same number of calories per day were given two different regimens to follow: one with three servings of dairy and one without.  Only difference.  The dairy group lost about 4 extra pounds in 4 weeks. Calcium alone does not have this effect, so there must be something else that’s special about dairy.

But what’s a good dairy choice? Skim or low fat milk is wonderful: high in protein, very low in fat.  So called “regular” or “whole” milk is only 3% – so 2% milk is better than nothing, but isn’t much of an improvement.  Low fat cheeses such as mini-babybells in the deli section of most grocery stores, skim milk string cheese pieces, low fat cottage cheese (2% is just fine – you don’t have to go all the way down to fat free) or yogurt all make good selections as well. Everything in moderation, but think about adding a lot more dairy to your life.

I have a question regarding the Bariatric Advantage Meal Replacement Shakes. I get these and take to work for the days I don’t get a lunch break. It says to mix with water, but I’m wondering if they can be mixed with skim milk for extra protein?

Also, every now and then I will mix a flavor packet (crystal light sugar free orange sunrise)in a bottle of water, then mix the flavored water in the vanilla meal replacement shake. Makes it taste like orange sherbert…

my confession: I mix’em with skim milk and blend with a hand-held immersion blender and some ice to make it more “shake”-like. I’m less crazy about just mixing them with water, but Dr. Hekier mixes his with water and likes it better that way. There are a lot of diet shake “recipes” on the web. My favorites include mixing ice, protein powder, skim milk and 1/2 a scoop of sugar-free fat-free instant pudding mix to thicken it up. Makes you feel full for hours and is easy to bring in at less than 250 calories, no fat and a TON of protein.
