Today I saw a nurse in our office (I won’t rat out her name) putting peanut butter on a slice of white bread for lunch. Actually, two pieces and about 4 tablespoons of peanut butter, total. When asked about her somewhat bare bones lunch, she stated that she was on a diet and she was eating the peanut butter for protein.
PEANUT BUTTER IS NOT A GOOD SOURCE OF PROTEIN
While it is true that two tablespoons of peanut butter have about 8 grams of protein (which is okay), it comes with a high price tag: 180+ calories and 12 grams of fat! Think about this: 1 cup of skim milk has 8-10 grams of protein, no fat and only has 80-90 calories! You could drink the milk and have two oreo cookies for the same nutritional profile as two tablespoons of peanut butter! And that’s not even counting the bread or crackers on which you’re spreading the peanut butter! It’s a no-brainer: peanut butter is a treat, not a protein source.
