Dr. Hekier and I were talking last night and we decided to start a semi-regular post (meaning every or every other week) describing what we will call the “mistake of the week”. What we mean is a mistake that we hear very commonly and want to put a spotlight on for a week. There are so many common sabotage agents out there and common misperceptions that we feel like trying to talk to everyone at the same time instead of individually educating folks during appointments may be the best way to get our message across. So without further ado, our first “mistake of the week.”
SWEET TEA!!!!!!!
I know I’ve said it before, but I’m gonna say it again. Regular soda (i.e. not diet soda) is bad for you in a multitude of ways, not the least of which is the 150+ calories (for just one can!) of pure sugar in addition to the carbonation which will stretch your stomach. BUT SWEET TEA IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE!!! Yes, it has no bubbles, but the “sweet” part of sweet tea is sugar… lots and lots of sugar. The large sweet tea from McDonald’s has over 400 calories of sugar!!! That’s almost two cans of Coke!!
Unsweetened tea is great/fabulous/wonderful and you can sweeten it with Equal, Splenda, Stevia, Sweet’n Low or whatever other non-calorie sweetener floats your boat. It’ll taste just like sweet tea but without all the diet sabotaging calories.

What about Crystal Light Drinks ?

Crystal Light is totally different – it’s sweetened with artificial sweeteners not sugar, so it has almost no calories and is an excellent choice. Even plain iced tea with splenda or equal is a great choice… just not “sweet tea” with sugar

I love crystal light, I even have my kids drink it instead of koolaid. They love it just as much and I can drink it also. Even before the band I drank unsweet tea sweetened with sweet n low. I love the taste and now if I try to drink sugar sweetened tea it just tastes like tea syrup!!!
