Recipe – Healthy burger

Dr. Keilin and I find that we don’t eat that much meat. Instead we use a lot of soy products. We do this I know it sounds gross but a lot of the soy stuff tastes great. And it is much healthier. Less fat and a good amount of protein. There are soy ‘crumbles’ which taste pretty much like ground beef, soy ‘chicken’ nuggets, and soy burgers. Check out your grocer for some soy products. The two that we usually see at stores such as Walmart are Boca and MorningStar Farms. Check out the freezer section.

Here’s a recipe for a soy burger with Boca Burgers:

INGREDIENTS
1 Boca Burger (there are many flavors to choose from)
1 hamburger bun (toast it well to help it go down)
1 Tablespoon Light Miracle Whip
Lettuce
Tomato
Onion
1 Tablespoon ketchup or Tablespoon mustard

I agree – I love the flame-grilled Boca burgers, but instead of the bread, which can be troublesome at times, I just add a piece of lowfat sliced cheese. I make a little mix of light miracle whip, low sugar ketchup and mustard, so I just eat the burger with a fork and dip it into the sauce. It really satisfies the occasional burger craving and can be made in about 2-3 minutes total!

Good idea. There are a lot of yummy soy-based products from both the Boca line and the Morningstar Farms line. THey generally have a very good amount of protein and very little fat. I remember many years ago my wife and I had a another couple over for dinner (they are both doctors). We made tacos and used the soy crumbles from Morningstar Farm and they couldn’t tell it wasn’t ground beef until we told them.

how about instead of using bread for the bun, would it be alright to
wrap the meat in a couple of leaves of the lettuce instead? or how about one of those tortilla wrapper shells things that you make soft tacos with? it seems if you toast it good before eating, it would be about the same as toasting a bun. yes or no? thanx.

I think both of those are good ideas. My wife and I don’t eat much bread products. We like Mission Extra Thin corn tortillas. They hav them at both Walmart and Albertson. Each tortilla has only 40 calories. Some people who are a bit tight on their lap band may need to toast it a bit to help it go down.

    Dr. Hekier,

I like making me a turkey burger. I eight use a pita or a grilled wheat flour shell until it is crispy. I spray butter flavored pan in my cooking pan and cook the flour shell until it is crispy. Then I add my mustard, tomato, let, and a slice of cheese. It taste awesome!
