Skills for Coping with Stress

We heartily invite our patients and their families to submit guest blog posts on topics they find important.  Since Stress can be a big trigger for overeating, one of our patients, Janet Potts, has generously written some excellent suggestions on stress-coping ideas.

Deep Breathing – in through the nose, out through the mouth

Imagery – allow your mind to focus on a special place – use sound, touch, taste, hearing, smells

Hobbies – fishing, hunting, painting (& I would add knitting :) -Dr.K)

Exercise – being in nature, taking fun classes

Relaxation time before eating – slow your mind and body

Be prepared for – eating out, the movies, meetings, parties, holidays

Reward yourself with non-food activities and items – new pants, time to yourself, lotion

Know the difference between guilt and conviction

Guilt = more stress, Conviction = movement in a positive direction
