[I want you all to give a warm "hello" to Lori Epperson who is starting to write for our blog so y'all don't get tired of hearing from me. And where does she find the handsome, young athletic men???? -Dr. K]
For all of those support group attendee wannabes here is a little taste of what we have going on in our meetings.
The first month I led a support group I was like…..I have no idea what I am doing. So, I got a handsome, young, athletic, well built, very outgoing and extremely informative personal trainer, to come in and talk about exercise. I brought in a few exercise bands to see if he would show us the proper way to use them. I picked out several people to use the bands, including one man that was there just to support his wife. About 10 minutes into the meeting everyone in the room was up doing band exercises…or imaginary band exercises since I didn’t have enough to go around….. and I was thrilled that we were able to motive people that admittedly did no form of exercises and they were having fun! Just being there and doing it with people that are going through the same things they are going through made a difference. Two of the women made arrangements to go to a gym together….they did not know each other prior to the meeting. And lots of them discovered that if you can’t do it one way then it can be modified to a way that works for you. Believe me…I learned that one really quick. There was an exercise that all you do is lean back in a chair….raise your legs then draw them up towards your body. I had no idea my legs were that hard to pick up. Dusty, the trainer, saw that and immediately went in to how to modify it to build up strength. YAY….my legs weren’t as heavy as I thought they were. I just needed a different starting point than some of the others.
The meetings are not a “what did you do wrong this month” kind of gig. It’s a “we’re all in this together so let’s help each other out” kind of thing. The only reason you should ever feel like you are going through this process alone is by choosing to do it that way. WE ARE HERE FOR YOU!!! Check out the schedule and join us. Who knows….you may be the motivating factor in another person’s journey. Can’t hurt to try……and you get brownie points with the surgeons….and Betty…..that’s one way to get a sweet treat.
