Recently I got on the scales (as I am wont to do) and noticed that they had creeped up just a hair – maybe 4 pounds over where I like being. I thought, hmmm, no problem, I’ll just cut back on the junky stuff and maybe extend my cardio sessions for a couple of weeks. But (and there’s always a but isn’t there?) that’s just not what happened. I thought I had gone into “diet” mode but we had a cookie bake-off with some friends and of course I had to sample both to judge, but there were some catered lunches at work and it’s rude not to eat food when you’re celebrating or it’s free, right? But it was icky cold and my tootsies are allergic to the icy floor, but my exercise partners had other obligations for a few months so I had nobody depending on me to be there in the gym so I……. didn’t go. So despite thinking that I was dieting, despite wanting to lose those extra pounds, low and behold, the scale did nothing. So even I, diet goddess extraordinaire, had to get back to fundamentals and focus. I had to count every calorie, had to start hitting the gym and had to politely defer on the free desserts at lunch. And finally the scale is starting to inch back in the right direction. So why am I telling you this? Because weight loss doesn’t come easy, with or without the super-tool that is the Band, with or without the desire it still takes a little awareness and a lot of making good choices. Sometimes you need to step back and take an honest assessment and give yourself honest answers – it really will yield a world of difference. We all know what foods are fattening, we all know what constitutes junk, so let’s put just a little mindfulness into our choices instead of taking the easy way out. Then we won’t be surprised by the results.

I like all the underlined buts…..they all add up to a very noticeable BUTT!

Peri I LOVE the response. I think Dr Keilin makes an excellent point here. No matter what you do it is ultimately your choice which way the scales go. You made the big choice to have a surgical procedure to “ASSIST” with your weight loss and your long fought journey to good health. Use it correctly to lose the weight for good. And one more….a lot of you may think “I can’t believe she is that serious over 4 pounds.” Just remember being ok with 4 pounds over makes it easier to be ok with 5 then 8 then 10. Next thing you know you have to go buy new pants…..see where I am going. Take care of the small stuff so it doesn’t become the hurdle you don’t have the energy to jump. Your docs are there for you…..your support group is there for you…..your dietitian is there for you….use them. WOW!!!! I think I just stepped up on a soapbox…..someone help me off this thing I’m getting a little dizzy!! OK Dr. Hekier, no comments on that one please.
